My LAST first day of school

Musing this AM about life. After a long teaching career and nearing 60, I will be going to my last "first day of school" tomorrow. Between my own student years, college, my kid's school years and my teaching career, I have been on the school calendar for 55 years now. The calendar in my head and on my kitchen wall runs from September to August. That first day excitement and jitters are there. I have seen a lot of change in schools over many years. Some good, many not so. I love my job teaching kids but have really come to be worn down by No-Child-Left-Behind and other unfunded, impossible mandates placed upon schools and teachers. I applaud high standards but they MUST make sense and be attainable. Sometimes I so yearn for the good old days - when kids came to school ready to learn and were respectful, parents were involved with their kids and their education, and the state actually paid for basic education providing enough textbooks and supplies. The last day of school will be a mixture of sadness and excitment. I have a passion kids and teaching but feel the time is here to go "play" and enjoy a slower pace. The RV sits there waiting to go to Alaska next summer and other places the school calendar simply does not allow. Life has also shown me that it can sometimes be short and tomorrow may never come. So, here's to a wonderful last school year. I will work hard to maintain a positive attitude when I get another directive affecting how I teach and fight creating the best learning enviornment and teaching for my kids. I will give the kids the best year I can. 180 days and counting.............. the RV keys await.

RE: Sleep Number Bed from Campingworld.

We bought a sleep number bed from CAmping World and like it very much. It did take a few ddays and several settings to find the ones we like. It never leaks, rarely needs any air in or out (beware mountain crossing and remember to let some rpessure out before travel as they warn of potentiol damage if a high number and high altitude.) Did get it on sale plus a free install that they did. I installed the first one in the other MH and was very easy to do. Took maybe an hour or so............ Good luck whatever you decide.

RE: Updated: Need prayers for my Grandmom, please...

Dee, so sad to read about the passing of your Grandmother. I was amazed to read your post about your tears and good memories because your words rang so true. The tears will pass and the memories will be even stronger in the days and years to come. I will be thinking of you and your family in the days to come.

RE: camping in northwest USA

I agree about Oregon State Parks - some of the BEST you will find. However, if you are there during weekends in spring or anytime in the summer, you will need reservation made WELL in advance. Check their website out and find when reservations can be made - something like 9 or 11 months is advance. Oregon Coast is spectacular and in many places you are driving along the coast with a wonderful view. Washington, not so. Oregon coast is a favorite place. Mount St. Helens visitor's center is well worth stopping at. Tells the story of the eruption and rebuilding and is amazing to see the pwoer of Mother Nature. HAve a wonderful trip

RE: Good Seattle/Tacoma RV parks?

Sadly there are few parks in the Seattle/Tacoma area and they are not pretty. Lake Pleasant north of Seattle or the park in Issaquah are probably the best. If in Tacoma you might check out the Gig Harbor RV park BUT then you must travel over a toll bridge daily to get into work. Not sure of the fee. There are also several in the Olympia area that might be worth checking out but then then you have a pretty good drive. Sorry the news around here is not so helpful.......... good luck.

RE: How Do You Level this Thing?

We used the Lynx levelers for years and got REALLY good at eyeballing how many to stack up to drive on. Easiest is to go up one block level for each layer - 2 on bottom, one centered and locked in place on top of those, 3+2+1, and so on. BEWARE using wood or blocks that are narrower than the tires - it can cause damage to the tires and always use blocks or wood under BOTH duals as stated above. Happy travels.

RE: Updated: Need prayers for my Grandmom, please...

Dee - so sorry to hear about your beloved Grandma. I lost mine after a series of strokes years ago. I miss her to this day but her body had become too worn out to go on. We sadly had to say goodbye. We took great comfort in her unwavering love and our wonderful memories. I will send prayers for you and your family for strength and for whatever is ahead for your Grandmother.

RE: Family medical history - Autism update

I have an autistic grandson (aspberger's). He is a wonderful young man and although he does have some issues with socialization, he is loving in his own way. He receives special services at school and has an aide to maximize what he can learn, he is easily distratced and is a follower......... He has made AMAZING progress in the past two years. The most important thing to the family is to get him the best education and life experience we can. Good luck with getting a good diagnosis and plan for this young man.

Last radiation treatment today

I am getting my last radiation treatment today (36 total) after cancer surgery in January and Chemo in April and May. I just wanted to thank all the wonderful folks here who have sent me messages of support and even better, tons of prayers. Next step is pills and close monitoring for a couple of years. All seems well but continued good thoughts and prayers will be gratefully accepted. Also wanted to let Cookie Lady and the rest of the many here struggling with cancer know that there can be light at the end of the long and sometime very dark tunnel. To everyone, remember to treasure those around you and the good times because life truly does change in an instant. Do not take your health for granted and DO get those annual checkups!!

RE: I'm back! Now what questions to ask????

1. Cargo Carrying Capacity - how much does the rig weigh empty and how much including fluids and people can it carry. Getting close/over to the limits is NOT a good thing for safety reasons. 2. How much weight can it safely tow if you want to pull a toad?(towed car) Also check the hitch rating. 3. Check inside and outside storage accessibility. Plan on NOT filling it all up just because it is there. (see item #1 above.) Kitchen cabinets tend to be very shallow and will not hold as much as you think! 4. Tank capacity - fresh water, grey(shower/sink) and black(toilet. 5. For me, how accessible is the bed? - I want a free standing bed I can leave made up and not have to crawl up into................. A corner bed is almost impossible make up properly. LOTS to think about before buying. I encourage you to look and keep narrowing down to the items that are important or essential to your use as well as finding a safe/easy handling rig. There can be great difference between manufacturers. Good luck and enjoy the adventure of defining and finding the perfect RV for you!

RE: Would you want to be a teacher?!?!?

I am a teacher with 20+ years of teaching experience. The changes in education have not been for the better. We started worrying about not hurting any child's self esteem for ANY reason and have gone down from there. Standards dropped and dropped more in that effort. Poverty, two income families with no one home, broken homes, homelessness, drug/alcohol impairment, lack of parental involvement, government interference and worse unfunded mandates, unmotivated students............. who is to blame? If I could answer that one, I could be a rich educational consultant. Topper to it all: No Child Left Behind = No Teacher Left Standing. Impossible goals with severe penalties for failing to continute to improve even if you are at a succeeding school.Insanity. I LOVE my job and students but am exhausted by it all. This will be my last year. If I were to be choosing now, I would NOT choose education as my career. How sad this all is. I fear for our future...

RE: ABS Light

Had the same issue with a brand new Workhorse chasis. After four trips in, had sensor replaced after loose WHEELS were considered the first culprit.(Yeah, I felt safe.........not!!!) Was an intermittment issue and not pleasant to cope with. Reading the manual reassured me I had brakes but not ABS function when the light would come on. Replacement fix seems to have done it. Finding the exact problem seems to be a challenge. Good luck and be safe!
